Kaynan Defeats Roberto, Marinho & Adele Win WNO Titles | WNO 25 Recap
Reigning ADCC absolute champion Kaynan Duarte put on a display of top pressure on his way to victory in the main event of WNO 25, where he defeated Roberto Jimenez via decision.
Duarte showed patience in trying to carve through Jimenez' guard and eventually passed for a moment. Jimenez showed flashes of brilliance at points in the match, showing off his world class guard retention and scoring a sweep in the closing seconds of the bout. But it wasn't enough to overcome Duarte's positional dominance throughout the 15-minute match.
After his victory, Duarte called for a match against the reigning WNO heavyweight champion Gordon Ryan. Duarte is scheduled to face Ryan in the main event superfight of ADCC 2026, but expressed doubts that Ryan would make it to the event.
Duarte wasn't the only WNO winner to call for a match with 'the King' Gordon Ryan.
After his submission victory against Declan Moody, Felipe Pena expressed his intentions for a shot against Ryan.
Pena secured a guillotine choke against Moody to earn his second submission victory on the WNO mats. He moves to 4-1 overall, with his only loss coming to Gordon Ryan. Pena suggested that, while waiting for a match with Ryan for the WNO title, he hopes for a match against Victor Hugo.
Adele Fornarino won the vacant WNO strawweight title with an ankle lock win over Sophia Cassella. Fornarino, the reigning absolute ADCC champion, is now 3-0 on WNO. Her submission win came early in the match, less than four minutes into the bout. That adds another quick submission to Fornarino's WNO resume. She's also the owner of the fastest leg lock in WNO history at 23 seconds.
The strawweight title belonged to Mayssa Bastos, who won the strap in 2021. Fornarino had been calling for the match against Bastos for most of 2023; but Bastos vacated her title when she won a title at ONE Championship.
Pedro Marinho earned another successful title defense in the light heavyweight division, this time against Izaak Michell.
The match was a 15-minute standing affair, never once hitting the mat. It often got chippy, and at times bloody. Marinho looked to mentally break Michell, stalking him around the mat during breaks in action, and baiting shots for his trademark guillotine.
Marinho is now 4-2 on WNO, and is undefeated in light heavyweight title matches, where he has won four in a row.
Upon his victory, he teased a move to the middleweight division, and asked for matches with reigning 185 lb champion Jonnatas Gracie or 170 lb champion Mica Galvão.
Fabyury Khrystyan picked up a WNO debut victory in the most thrilling match of the night against WNO vet Daniel Sathler.
The two Brazilian athletes fought from corner to corner of the mat, slamming into tables and engaging in ferocious scrambles. In the second half of the match, Khrystyan secured and held Sathler's back, giving him a clear advantage in the match which went to decision.
Helena Crevar is now 3-0 on WNO after a decision victory over WNO debutant Leilani Bernales. Crevar poured on the attack from the guard position, transitioning from upper body to lower body attacks.Â
Crevar struggled to pass when she got on top, but her guard work was enough to give her the judges' nod for another consecutive victory.
In the first match on the main card, Carlos Henrique won a decision in a grudge match against Max Hanson to move to 2-0 on WNO.
The match between Hanson and Henrique was a late addition to the card. The two WNO veterans met last month at the lightweight final of the IBJJF No-Gi Pan Championships. Hanson won the match on a series of strategic grip breaks amid Henrique's guard pulls, forcing Henrique to tally up several penalties. Those penalties were the deciding factor in the match. The two have traded barbs on social media, which, according to Hanson, started when Henrique publicly challenged Hanson's invitation to ADCC 2024.
